Arch Linux: Possibly Missing Firmware for Module

Posted on March 10, 2016

How to deal with "Possibly missing firmware for module" warning message from initramfs, which usually occurs after a kernel update...

Problem

When initramfs are being rebuild after a kernel update, some kernel warnings may appear, e.g.:

==> WARNING: Possibly missing firmware for module: wd719x
==> WARNING: Possibly missing firmware for module: aic94xx

These appear to any Arch Linux user, especially those who have not installed these firmware modules yet. If you do not use hardware which uses these firmware modules, you can safely ignore this message.

Solution

A search for the missing firmware driver modules in AUR can be performed as follows:

$ yaourt -Ss wd719x
$ yaourt -Ss aic94xx

Installation of the selected packages (that were found) is straightforward:

$ yaourt -S wd719x-firmware aic94xx-firmware

The kernel needs to be recompiled afterwards:

$ sudo mkinitcpio -p linux

No warnings anymore...
